Treating Head Injuries at Urgent Care

December 14, 2023 by Dr. Eric Ellis

Head injuries, both minor and major, can happen to anyone anywhere. While some injuries are mild, others could prove severe and require immediate medical attention. From sports collisions to minor accidents to everyday slip-and-falls, these injuries should be treated promptly and carefully.

Thankfully, Urgent Care can play a critical role in providing quick and accessible treatment for head injuries when patients need it most.

Concussions are common types of head injuries, especially during fall sports seasons. Concussions can arise from a blow to the head or a sudden jolt that causes the brain to move within the skull. Symptoms of a concussion can include headache, dizziness, confusion, memory problems, and nausea. Although concussions are generally considered mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI’s), they should never be minimized or ignored.

At Urgent Care, healthcare professionals perform a thorough evaluation to determine the severity of the concussion. Treatment often involves rest and close monitoring for any worsening symptoms. Urgent care centers can also provide guidance on when it’s safe to return to regular activities, including sports.

Post-concussion Syndrome

While a concussion itself may be mild, some individuals develop post-concussion syndrome, which includes prolonged symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and cognitive impairment. Urgent care centers can provide follow-up care for individuals with post-concussion syndrome, including management of symptoms.

Scalp Lacerations

Scalp lacerations, often caused by cuts, falls, or accidents, can result in bleeding and significant discomfort. Urgent care centers are well-equipped to handle these injuries and can clean, suture, and dress the wound to stop bleeding and minimize the risk of infection. Most patients with serious head injuries will be referred to the ER.

Monitoring and Follow-up

In cases where a head injury requires monitoring or further evaluation, urgent care centers can provide comprehensive care. They may recommend follow-up appointments, neuroimaging, and neurological assessments to ensure that the injury is healing properly and there are no long-term complications.

Remember, when it comes to head injuries, it’s always better to seek prompt medical attention to ensure the best possible outcome for your health and well-being.

As your trusted urgent care clinic, we would like to notify our patients about the Open Payments database put in place by the Medical Board of California as of January 1, 2024.

The federal Physician Payments Sunshine Act requires that detailed information about payment and other payments of value worth over ten dollars ($10) from manufacturers of drugs, medical devices, and biologics to physicians and teaching hospitals be made available to the public.

The Open Payments database is a national transparency program that collects and publishes information about financial relationships between drug and medical device companies and certain healthcare providers.
